Urea is a naturally occurring compound found in the skin's natural moisturising factor. At low concentrations (2–10%) it acts as a humectant and keratolytic, softening dry and rough skin. At higher concentrations it functions as an exfoliant. It is particularly effective for extremely dry or hyperkeratotic skin conditions.
