Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) is an anionic surfactant used as a cleansing and foaming agent. It is effective at removing oil and dirt but is one of the most commonly identified skin irritants. It disrupts the skin barrier, increases transepidermal water loss, and can trigger or exacerbate eczema and contact dermatitis with repeated use.
