Methylisothiazolinone (MI) is a synthetic biocide and preservative formerly used widely in rinse-off and leave-on cosmetics. It has been identified as a strong contact allergen responsible for a global epidemic of allergic contact dermatitis. The EU has banned its use in leave-on cosmetics and restricted it severely in rinse-off products.
